In 1998 there were more than 45,000 stray dogs and 60,000 stray cats in the
city of Los Angeles.  In the same year, nearly 60,000 animals were put to death.  Animal overpopulation is an enormous problem all over California.  These animals were at East Valley Animal shelter in mid April.  The shelter does not give every animal a set ammount of time in the shelter before it is put down.  An animal may stay in the shelter untill it is adopted.  If the shelter becomes so full that there is no room for an animal, animal rescue organizations take some, but others are put down. Animal that are sick or dangerous are also put to sleep.  An animal is not allowed to leave the shelter unless it has been spayed or neutered, registered, and has some kind of identification.
A shelter kennel worker gives a puppy a look over before he is
taken home by his new owner.
